It is difficult to imagine the number of individuals needing food when most of us are so fortunate to have well stocked refrigerators and freezers for all days, not only the holidays. For that reason the Sturbridge Rotary Club decided in 2008 to provide Thanksgiving Baskets to the needy through the Catholic Charities Food Share Program of Southbridge. It’s very rewarding to witness the happy change in facial expressions of those in need who carry out their Thanksgiving Basket. In 2013, Food Share altered the program somewhat by providing families with a turkey suitable for the size of their family and a grocery gift certificate to purchase the trimmings to their dinner. By 2015, the number of families requesting a turkey and grocery certificate had increased to over 400 families and Food Share found they do not have the funds to continue this special Thanksgiving program, nor do they have the volunteers. Fortunately, eight local churches have come together to form the Tri-Community Church Collaborative. Because they are a new organization, they started out with a goal of collecting 250 turkeys for local families in need this Thanksgiving. They are also collecting items for food baskets. Consequently, Sturbridge Rotary donated funds to the Church Collaborative to help purchase the turkeys.
2016 is the ninth year that Sturbridge Rotary Club has participated in this worthwhile cause. To date we have contributed over $2,600 to pre-screened families in the towns of Sturbridge, Southbridge and Charlton to enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner.
Rotary…helping local families in the community.
