The Golf Classic was held again after several years of absence and it was a very big hit (no pun intended). Beautiful weather was with us as a full roster of foursomes hit the fairways. The day ended with cool beverages, prizes, a silent auction and a hefty roast beef dinner. Our thanks to all the players, sponsors and volunteers!
And the winners are the Militia Team that shot a 51. Shown left to right are: Austin Jenkins, Dave Tetzel, Howard Mosher and Joe Mahaney. Congratulations!
Club members and guests enjoyed a beautiful Sunday afternoon cruise on the Indian Princess Paddlewheeler on Webster Lake. Two members of the Southbridge Rotary joined us in fellowship. After the boat ride we all gathered at 88′s Restaurant nearby for a great dinner!
PP Bill Lemke was presented the Outstanding Achievement Award by Past President Austin Jenkins (right). For several years Bill served as Chair of the Membership Committee bringing in new members. Congratulations Bill and thanks for all your service to the Club!
Dave Zonia was presented an award for his Club service as Sergeant of Arms during the 2015-2016 Rotary year. Presenting the award is Past-President Austin Jenkins (left). Congratulations Dave!
PDG Klaus Hachfeld gave a very interesting presentation to us on laser technology. He reviewed its many applications including military and medical uses. Do you have a laser in your home? If you have a DVD player, you have a laser.
Two of the three students we sponsored to attend Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) training attended a recent meeting and told us about their experience during this 3-day leadership program. Presentations, activities, and workshops cover leadership fundamentals and ethics, communication skill, problem solving and conflict management. The students felt that the most difficult part of the event is saying farewell to the new friends they had made. Shown are Matthew Sexton and Samuel Markey. Sylvia Costa was not able to attend our meeting.
Sturbridge Rotary recently helped our good friends in the Southbridge Club that hosted fireworks in celebration of the 200th Anniversary of the Town of Southbridge. We did jobs like selling glow necklaces, parking cars, and did a bucket collection for the Club’s scholarship efforts. Despite one brief downpour it was a fun evening!
Rotary recently held a Fellowship Gathering that was relaxing and fun. It’s a great opportunity to get to know the newer members and to renew energy and enthusiasm for the great work that Rotary does in our community and the world. Good food too!
Another fascinating presentation by Dino Tata, NASA Space Exploration Ambassador, who discussed the history of the Apollo Program and the Juno mission to Jupiter. Two facts of many include: It’s been 47 years since the U.S. first landed on the moon; and the computers used to run the Apollo missions were less powerful than the chips in a normal wrist watch today.
