Congratulations to Austin, PDG Carl, Peter and PP Bill for a great job selling 110 raffle tickets for the lottery ticket basket. Peter was able to establish a Sturbridge Rotary station at the Crafts Fair located at Tantasqua Regional High School on Saturday and the tickets sold like hotcakes. There are still a few tickets left for you to buy. Hopefully you’ll be the lucky one!

Susan Waters spoke to the Club about an initiative of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health called MA Responds. This program will enhance the Commonwealth’s ability to prepare for and respond to health related emergencies and events such as the 6/1/2011 tornado, hurricanes, ice storms, etc. It is a web-based system for registration, management, communication and mobilization of volunteers. MA Responds is part of a nationwide effort to ensure that volunteer professionals can be quickly identified and pre-credentialed so that they can be properly utilized when an emergency or disaster strikes. By registering with MA Responds, we can be part of an alert system and respond, when activated, to a public health event or emergency in our local area.

To volunteer and be trained, we are encouraged to register at: www.maresponds.org. All levels of volunteers, clinical or non-clinical, students, and active or retired professionals are welcome.
Bill Mason and Bill Pioppi gave us an operating overview of the John Paul II Food Pantry located in Southbridge. Over 50 tons of food are distributed yearly to qualified individuals and families in the communities of Southbridge and Sturbridge and that number is growing. Volunteers sort food donated by local grocery stores and by members of the communities they serve. Some food is also supplied by the Worcester County Food Bank but the demand exceeds the supply. Some financial donations are received but the Food Pantry is always actively seeking additional funds. The presentation was another example of the many ways all of us can help those in need.
